Aberdeen University Vegetarian and Vegan Society
Aberdeen University Vegetarian and Vegan Society are incredibly busy over coming weeks with an impressive array of events and campaigns planned. The society are taking part in a politics debate on animal rights, alongside manning a week-long 'Great Minds' stall at the university.
If that wasn't enough, the society are also running events as part of VIVA!'s 'Mother's Day' campaign for the plight of dairy cows, and organising a sponsored 'Go Vegan' week.
Durham University Animal Rights
Durham's focus this term is animal testing. They launched the campaign by discussing medical and scientific objections to the practice with an informative and thorough presentation on the subject, the slides from which are available on their website. Forthcoming events include a series of talks, campaigns, film showings and more, including "Animal Testing Exposed", Monday 3rd March, a talk by Dr. Katy Taylor (BUAV) and Dr. Jarrod Bailey (Animal Aid) on why animal testing is ethically and scientifically indefensible. Everyone welcome, so come along and ask the expert speakers your questions.
Nottingham University Vegetarian and Vegan Society
Nottingham University Vegetarian and Vegan Society plans to host a week long 'Big Veg Week 2008' as part of the month long celebrations for Veggie Month in March, including a 'Big Veg Pledge.' The group are hoping to encourage as many students as possible to try vegetarianism for a week; if just one hundred people were to go vegetarian for just one week, then 175 lives will be saved. Food for thought indeed!
Queens University Belfast Animal Welfare Society
After a lot of work at the university, the QUB Animal Welfare Society is finally official! The group will be campaigning on a variety of animal issues, including working with a group in Dublin to ban fur farming. New members are very welcome, so if you're a student at QUB then do get in touch.
Violence Free Science
The breaking news from Sussex is a new report by students and scientific professionals, Sussex University - Challenged, which challenges the University and Home Office over animal experiments. In the first case of its kind at the university, student group Violence Free Science (VFS) has produced a detailed examination and report into live experiments on animals at Sussex. See the full news story here.
Voice for Ethical Research at Oxford
VERO have got the year off to a good start, continuing their series of talks by inspiring and influential campaigners. The discussions are always friendly and lively, with vegan refreshments to help things along. The next talk will be on Thursday 28th Feb, 5.00-6.30pm, when InterNICHE co-ordinator Nick Jukes will be speaking about "Ethical and Effective Acquisition of Knowledge and Skills in Life Science Education and Training". Talks are open to all, so if you're in the Oxford area then go along!
